How Our Amish Furniture is Made: Understanding Heirloom Furniture

At Mountain View Furniture, we believe that the furniture in your home should be more than a place to set your coffee cup or lay your head at night. It should be part of your life story, part of your family’s legacy, and a piece that carries meaning from one generation to the next. That’s why we’re passionate about the process of how our Amish furniture is made.

So, what actually goes into making real Amish furniture? What makes it so different from the tables, chairs, and beds you see in big-box stores? To understand heirloom quality, we’ll take you behind the scenes — from the selection of hardwoods to the final finish. By the end, we think you will truly appreciate the craftsmanship behind every piece.

It Starts with A Tradition Rooted in Purpose and Craft

Craftsman measures a hardwood board and marks a cut line in a woodshop.

Amish furniture isn’t churned out on conveyor belts or assembled with particle board. Instead, it’s crafted by artisans who have learned woodworking skills passed down through generations, often within their own families.

This work starts long before your dining table is measured or your bedroom set is sanded. It begins with a deep respect for the wood, a commitment to time-honored methods, and values like function, durability, and simplicity over speed and trendiness.

The Amish Know American Hardwoods — The Foundation of Quality

Woodworker scrapes solid hardwood tabletop to prep for finishing.

Unlike cheap furniture that relies on veneers, laminates, or composite materials, Amish furniture is crafted from solid, North American hardwoods. Some examples you’ll find in almost any Amish wood shop include:

  • Oak — classic grain and resilient, accessible, versatile warm tone
  • Cherry — warm hues and elegant aging, traditionally seen in darker, warm finishes
  • Brown Maple — commonly used, known for strength and a clean, smooth finish
  • Hickory — rugged, expressive grain and unmatched durability that is perfect for heavily used furniture
  • Quartersawn White Oak — a premium choice with striking grain patterns that pop through the finish

These woods are more than just sturdy — they tell a story. The grain, the color variation, the way the surface stands the test of time — these are features you that can’t be accurately replicated by man made materials.

Unlike synthetic materials or veneers that peel and chip, solid wood furniture can be refinished, repaired, and restored, which means it can last decades, even centuries.

From Rough Lumber to Refined Furniture: How Amish Furniture is Made

Stacked hardwood beams ready for Amish furniture building.

Once the woods are selected, the real artistry begins. Amish woodworkers use traditional craftsmanship and a mix of old-fashioned and modern tools that honor their beliefs and precision over speed.

Traditional Tools, Timeless Techniques

Woodworker sands solid wood table corner with a pneumatic sander.

In many Amish workshops, you won’t find loud, sprawling factories. The labor and craft is controlled by man, not machine. Tools are often powered by air compressors, gas, or hydraulic systems. Hand planes, chisels, draw knives, and other traditional tools are used extensively to shape and refine each piece. Every single inch of the furniture is under the watch of a careful eye.

Amish craftsmen may move at a slower pace than today’s fast-paced society, but they earn that pace with results: they shape every piece by hand with intention and mastery, and that process gives Amish furniture its unrivaled character.

Joinery — The Secret to Strength Without Fasteners

Dovetail drawer joinery on solid wood Amish dresser drawer.

When Amish craftsmen build furniture, they fit each piece together with wood-on-wood joinery—not screws or metal brackets—so every joint stays firm for years.

Two traditional joinery techniques you’ll often see are:

  • Mortise and Tenon Joints — where one piece of wood fits snugly into a carved cavity in another, creating a stable bond without hardware.
  • Dovetail Joints — especially common in drawers, where interlocking “tails” and “pins” fit like puzzle pieces that won’t come apart.

These methods not only make the furniture strong but also visually expressive. The interwoven lines of dovetails or the precise edges of mortise joints speak to a builder who isn’t rushing a job.

Attention to Structural Detail

Woodworker sands hardwood board edge on a wide belt sander.

Beyond the basic framework, Amish builders think about the small things that make furniture last:

  • Dado and groove joints for shelving that won’t sag
  • Floating panels that allow wood to expand and contract
  • Steam bending and shaping for graceful curves and arcs without weakening the wood fibers

These techniques prevent warping, splitting, and failure over time. They want to make sure that the furniture you bring into your home today is still standing strong decades from now.

Hand-Finishing: Enhancing Beauty and Longevity

Once craftsmen shape, assemble, and sand the piece smooth, they move it to finishing. This stage is like the cherry or whipped cream on top of a milkshake. It’s a small portion, but it’s what makes the final product visually complete.

Sanding and Surface Prep

How Amish furniture is made: craftsman sands solid wood panel with orbital sander.

Craftsmen hand-sand everything before they apply the finish. This step doesn’t just make the piece look smooth — it helps the wood fibers to absorb stains and oils evenly and richly.

Staining and Sealing by Hand

Worker hand-applies stain to solid wood tabletop with cloth.

Craftsmen select and apply every stain with care. Amish artisans use application techniques that bring out the natural character of the wood — such as the grain patterns, swirls, and subtle tonal variations.

Finally, craftsmen apply sealers or protective coatings by hand to protect your piece from daily wear and tear. Because this isn’t a factory sprayer — it’s a craftsperson’s hands guiding every brush stroke.

Built to Last — Not to Be Discarded

Solid wood dining table set in bright modern dining room.

One of the biggest misconceptions about furniture today is that it’s disposable. Flat-pack tables might be cheap and quick, but they often don’t survive long. Amish furniture, on the other hand, is built for life.

Here’s what makes Amish furniture a generational piece:

  • Superior joinery that holds tight through decades
  • Solid wood that you can refinish and update.
  • Custom options that match your home and your life
  • Hand-applied finishes that protect and beautify wood

This isn’t fleeting furniture — this is the kind of craftsmanship that becomes part of family history. It’s the dining table where dinners are meaningful, the bedroom set that offers a lifetime of restful nights, the desk where lifetime productivity unfolds.

Made Your Way — Customization and Personality

Custom wood cabinets shown in multiple finishes and styles.

A big part of what we love about Amish furniture at Mountain View Furniture is that pieces aren’t one-size-fits-all. When you order a piece you get to participate in the process.

You can choose:

  • The type of hardwood
  • The stain or finish
  • Specific dimensions to fit your space
  • Custom details like edge profiles, hardware, and more

This means your furniture truly reflects your home and your style. It’s not something that came off a production line — it’s something made for you.

Why Authentic Amish Craftsmanship Matters

Amish solid wood bed and nightstand in warm, modern bedroom.

In an era where appliances die quickly and trends change rapidly, Amish furniture stands apart because it’s not chasing the next fad. Its design philosophy focuses on function, beauty, and lasting value.

Here’s why this matters:

1. Durability You Can Feel

Amish furniture withstands the rigors of real life — daily meals, lively gatherings, everyday use — without failing. This isn’t just furniture; it’s a long-term investment.

2. Beauty That Deepens With Time

The way solid wood ages with developing character that makes each piece more beautiful over years and decades.

3. Sustainability and Responsibility

Choosing solid wood and traditional techniques means pieces that don’t end up in landfills. You can repair and refinish them, which makes them a much greener choice than mass-produced alternatives.

Bringing Amish Craftsmanship to Your Home

Conclusion — The Mountain View Difference

At Mountain View Furniture, we help you find pieces that fit modern homes and lifestyles while staying rooted in timeless craftsmanship. How to Prepare Outdoor Furniture for Winter

Whether you’re in the thick of winter or preparing for the coming cold, we’re glad you found this guide. Outdoor furniture is such a wonderful part of our homes and we want to help you find ways to make it last a lifetime. In this breakdown, we’ll help you understand when it’s time to store or cover your furniture, what furniture materials handle winter weather, and how to be better prepared for the next year.

When to “Winterize” Your Furniture

First frost on lawn signals outdoor furniture for winter prep.

No matter what methods you take to protect your furniture, there’s always one sign it’s time to prep for winter: the first frost.

While this isn’t a problem for most southern states, the northern and midwestern states are all too familiar with the chills of late fall. The first frost can come sneakily and quickly, and once it shows up, the first snow is bound to follow close behind. These shifting temperatures and moisture levels can have a harrowing effect on outdoor furniture if it’s not properly prepared for the winter season.

Why Preparing Your Furniture for Winter Matters

Snow-covered patio table and chairs showing outdoor furniture for winter damage.

The most common side effects of leaving your furniture out all winter include:

  • Rust (applies to fasteners, hardware, and most metal components)
  • Warping
  • Cracking
  • Mildew
  • Mold
  • Shrinkage
  • Staining
  • Chipping

By winterizing your furniture, you increase the lifespan and appearance of your outdoor furniture. However, you may not need to winterize your furniture if you’ve purchased a piece of furniture made for harsher weather conditions.

What are Types of Weather-Proofed Outdoor Furniture

If you’re looking for winter-ready furniture, the most popular type is poly furniture. Poly, or HDPE (high density poly ethylene), is made from recycled plastics and makes for a durable material that holds up in even some of the toughest weather conditions. This means our outdoor furniture is designed to withstand the varying Tennessee weather.

The pigment in poly is integrated into the plastics so it won’t chip, fade, or peel like a paint or even stain. Most poly furniture makers also invest in fasteners and hardware that is as hardy against fluctuating climates. This means there is no risk of rust. Plus, the recycled plastics creates a non-porous environment to prevent mold and mildew.

Covering vs. Storing

Covered patio seating by pool, deciding cover vs store outdoor furniture for winter.

No matter whether you own wood, poly, or metal outdoor furniture – it’s important to know if a cover or storage is sufficient protection. Let’s break down what each furniture material needs in order to survive a full winter season.

Wood Furniture

Wood patio dining set outdoors, tips for storing wood furniture for winter.

Store wood furniture during snowy, wet winter months, though some manufacturers offer hardier woods that can handle winter with less protection. (These options tend to be quite expensive in comparison.) A furniture cover alone can’t stop fluctuating temperatures and humidity, and those swings can warp or crack the wood without a single snowflake touching it. Store wood furniture in a climate-controlled environment. If this option is not possible, try to find a well-sealed basement or shed and cover the furniture while it’s in storage to protect it from dust or other

Metal Furniture

Metal patio table and chairs, store metal outdoor furniture for winter to prevent rust.

Store most metal furniture in a garage or shed during the winter to protect it. This is a precaution to prevent pesky rust that not only ruins the look of your furniture, but can also cause chipping and overall erosion.

However, if you own furniture made of rust-proof metals, you may feel comfortable leaving outside covered or uncovered. We recommend following manufacture care instructions for optimal results. These metals lead the market as the best rust-proof options:

  • Galvanized steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Aluminum (This option is lightweight and often requires something to stabilize it during windy conditions)

Poly Furniture

Poly patio dining set, outdoor furniture for winter that can stay outside.

As we mentioned earlier, poly furniture is able to withstand the winter conditions. It’s a heavy material that handles moisture and cold well. While there’s no major risks to leaving your poly furniture out all year, some homeowners choose to cover their poly furniture for easier cleanup and prevention of icicle formations.

Removing Upholstery

Porch swing with cushions, remove upholstery for winter to prevent moisture damage.

Remove your upholstery during the winter months, no matter what material it’s made of. Typically this part of the furniture is easy to store in bags or boxes in your garage, closet, or basement so it’s not in the way.

Storing your upholstery keeps it not only looking fresh, but smelling good as well. The last thing you want happening to your cushions is discoloration, wear, or mold! Check the tags on your upholstery so you know how to wash and dry it before you bring it back outside for the summer.

Find Furniture Ready for the Tennessee Weather

We invite you to check out our selection of deck chairs, patio tables, rope swings, and more on this website or at our Greenville, Tennessee showroom. Every piece is built with comfort, beauty, and longevity in mind. You’ll never need another piece of backyard or patio furniture when you switch to handcrafted poly.

Amish Furniture for Homes Across the Appalachian Mountains

Tennessee knows how to build homes with character. From rustic cabins in the mountains to 1930s Craftsman houses in the suburbs, each has its own charm. Furnishing them can be both a delight and a challenge. Here, we’ll look at five common home styles and show how to furnish each with honesty and balance.

The Amish in Ohio and Indiana build solid wood furniture in Shaker, Mission, traditional, and mid-century modern styles. Their furniture fits homes of many kinds, from old cabins to modern mountain lodges. Each piece is made to last, showing the same skill and care that went into the homes themselves.

Historic and Rustic Cabins

The first homes in the Appalachian region were cabins—practical shelters built by hand. With notched log walls and stone foundations, they were made to last. Each builder left a personal mark, shaping a simple but lasting style.

That same spirit pairs well with Shaker and Mission furniture, where form follows function. In a cabin, every piece should serve a purpose. Avoid fancy furniture and bring in natural textures and tones. People who lived in these homes valued simplicity and the beauty of the world around them.

In the living room, choose comfort and integrity—sofas with exposed wood frames and visible grain, metal joinery, and simple inlays. In the kitchen, look for sturdy trestle or leg tables, showing saw marks or hand-finished edges. For bedrooms, use natural-stained or darker wood with modest lines. Mission pieces, with their honesty and clean design, fit well in this setting.

Farmhouse and Vernacular Houses

Amish furniture for farmhouse style living room with tufted sofa and solid-wood tables.

Scattered through rural Tennessee are farmhouses and vernacular homes. Both were built out of necessity, often using local materials and simple designs. They tend to be two-story homes with smaller rooms and a focus on family and practicality.

Mission and Shaker furniture suit these homes well, especially smaller pieces in natural tones. Use sturdy fabrics like linen or cotton. Let the space reflect family history with heirlooms or handmade items. These homes welcome rest after work, so choose overstuffed sofas and strong tables.

Amish bedroom furniture Tennessee—modern farmhouse bed, black dresser and nightstand.

If you want an update, lean toward modern farmhouse style—tufted upholstery, black metal accents, and simple wood furniture. In bedrooms, a Shaker four-poster bed brings a classic touch. For a simpler look, try a two-toned set with plain knobs and tapered legs. Keep everything grounded in comfort and modest design.

Craftsman

In the early 1900s, designers like Gustav Stickley led the Arts and Crafts movement, which rejected the ornate style of the Victorian era. Craftsman homes from that period feature natural wood, exposed beams, and built-in furniture.

These homes often have smaller rooms, so choose furniture that is sturdy and multi-purpose. Avoid painted finishes; instead, pick pieces that highlight the wood grain or leather seating. Mission furniture works well, especially with square shapes and visible joinery.

Solid-wood Amish bedroom furniture Tennessee—Craftsman arch bed and dresser.

In bedrooms, look for sets that show craftsmanship through exposed joints or distinct wood patterns. In dining rooms, a trestle table or oak top with a metal base blends classic and modern looks. A Craftsman home can lean casual or elegant, depending on how you furnish it.

Colonial and Tudor Revival Homes

Amish Colonial furniture—elegant living room with curved-leg tables, media console, and coastal dining

Centuries after the first cabins, builders looked to Europe for ideas. Tudor Revival homes recall 1600s England, with steep roofs, half-timbered walls, and stone accents. Inside, you’ll find heavy beams, large fireplaces, and a sense of history.

Amish furniture for Colonial Revival homes—red-stained bedroom set with bed, dresser, armoire.

Colonial Revival homes look to early America for balance and symmetry. Their furniture is lighter and more refined, showing a simpler take on European tradition. Both styles pair well with Amish furniture that values structure and proportion.

Tudor style Amish furniture bedroom with exposed metal joinery and paneled bed.

In living rooms, Colonial homes look best with polished wood and smooth, curved lines. Tudor homes work well with darker tones and iron accents. In dining rooms, Colonial furniture should be lighter, while Tudor furniture can be heavier with simple modern details. For bedrooms, Colonial headboards may feature thin inlays and gentle curves; Tudor designs use thicker wood and exposed metal joinery.

Mountain Lodges

Amish furniture for mountain lodges—rustic bedroom set with panoramic mountain view.

Mountain lodges today blend rustic and modern styles. They use stone, concrete, and wood with clean lines and open layouts. Broad windows bring in natural light and connect the home to the landscape. Every detail feels deliberate, keeping focus on the view.

Appalachian mountain home furniture—minimal living room with solid-wood tables and white seating.

These homes are retreats, not workplaces. They offer peace and simplicity—a chance to rest in nature. Their style is quiet and open, relying on texture and proportion rather than decoration.

Amish dining room furniture Tennessee—trestle table, bench, and upholstered chairs.

When furnishing, mix rustic and modern elements. Combine black metal with rough-hewn wood, glass with matte finishes, or mid-century lines with natural materials. Each piece should have room to stand out. In living areas, choose simple modern shapes without losing comfort. In dining spaces, try contrasting tables and leather chairs. Bedrooms can vary—gray maple in one, natural oak in another—each designed to feel calm and welcoming.

Conclusion

No matter the style of your home, the same rule applies: buy less, but buy well. Pick furniture that serves a purpose, fits the space, and will last. Keep the focus on comfort, proportion, and craftsmanship. Over time, each room will tell its own story—steady, useful, and built to endure.

What is the Best Furniture For Your Porch?

A porch is more than just a space—it sets the tone for how you unwind. It’s a great place where you can connect with others and enjoy the outdoors. Whether sipping a quiet cup of coffee in the morning or chatting with friends as the sun goes down, the right furniture can transform the experience. At Mountain View Furniture, we blend comfort with craftsmanship to help you create a porch that feels like home. For an easy upgrade, start with three timeless favorites: rope swings, gliders, and porch chairs.

1.    Rope Swings: Nostalgic Charm Meets Everyday Comfort

When it comes to furniture for porch spaces, few pieces are as inviting as a gently swaying rope swing. There’s something instantly comforting about the motion of a porch swing. A mix of nostalgia and relaxation that turns any porch into a personal retreat. Whether you’re curling up with a good book, sipping sweet tea, or just enjoying the breeze, a well-crafted rope swing adds warmth and character to your outdoor space.

One standout option is the 5′ Classic Swing with Cupholders. Designed with both form and function in mind, this swing is made from durable poly lumber that resists fading, cracking, and weather damage. The built-in cupholders add a practical touch, making it easy to keep your drink close while you unwind. Its classic silhouette fits seamlessly with a variety of porch styles, from rustic country homes to clean-lined modern farmhouses.

Another favorite is the Grandpa Swing, a versatile piece that blends a traditional design with long-lasting materials. Its smooth, gentle motion and clean look make it a popular choice for homeowners who want to combine comfort with timeless style.

Whether you’re furnishing a front porch or creating a cozy corner in the backyard, these rope swings deliver more than just visual appeal—they offer an everyday escape, right at home.

2. Gliders: Smooth Motion with Classic Porch Style

If you love the relaxing motion of a swing but prefer something a little more grounded, a glider is the perfect blend of comfort and stability. Gliders offer the same soothing back-and-forth motion without needing the overhead space or hardware of a traditional swing, making them an excellent option for porches of all sizes.

As essential pieces of furniture for porch setups, gliders create a peaceful and cozy vibe, ideal for everything from morning coffee to winding down after a long day. With durable materials and timeless designs, these pieces bring both function and beauty to your outdoor space.

One standout is the Classic Glider Chair, a well-rounded favorite that combines classic styling with smooth, effortless movement. Its gently slanted back and supportive seat offer a comfortable fit. Also, the clean lines and traditional shape make it easy to coordinate with any outdoor décor—rustic, modern, or somewhere in between.

If you’re looking for a piece that makes a more visual statement, the Adirondack Balcony Glider is perfect. It merges the wide arms and deep seat of a classic Adirondack chair with a gentle glider motion. It’s the kind of seat that invites slow weekend mornings, good conversations, and moments of calm on the porch.

3. Porch Chairs: The Foundation of a Welcoming Space

When it comes to choosing furniture for porch living, porch chairs are the true workhorses of any setup. They’re the pieces you’ll return to again and again—whether you’re enjoying a quiet morning alone, chatting with neighbors, or hosting a casual gathering. More than just seating, porch chairs provide the structure and style that define your outdoor space.

These chairs serve as anchor pieces, offering both function and personality. Whether you’re creating a cozy nook with just a couple of seats or designing a full-scale outdoor living area, the right porch chairs help tie it all together. They’re easy to mix and match with swings, gliders, side tables, and planters, giving you flexibility to make the space truly your own.

A favorite among customers is the Folding Adirondack Chair. This chair combines classic Adirondack comfort with smart, space-saving design. It folds easily for seasonal storage, yet doesn’t compromise on style or support. With its wide arms and gently reclined seat, it’s perfect for unwinding in the shade. It comes in various rich colors, making it easy to coordinate with your home’s exterior or add a pop of contrast to your porch décor.

For a timeless touch, the Porch Rocking Chair is a must-have. With its smooth rocking motion and sturdy build, it’s a staple for anyone who values tradition and comfort. It’s the perfect choice for slow evenings spent catching up with family or watching the sunset after a long day. Its solid construction ensures it will stand up to daily use and changing weather, season after season.

Final Thoughts

When choosing furniture for porch spaces, it’s about more than just filling the space. It’s about creating a spot that invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and enjoy the moment. Furniture for Your Dining Room: What Do You Need?

Choosing furniture for your dining room may be the most important part of settling into a new home. Families connect over food, conversations flow across islands, and friendships flourish around tables. Mountain View Furniture has a staggering diversity of beautiful, carefully crafted wood pieces for a dining room. But which ones do you need? This guide will lead you to discover the pieces that will best transform your dining room into the heart of your home.

Tables and Chairs

Anson dining table and chairs

For a functional room, choosing the right dining room table and chairs is key. To begin with, consider how you and your family hope to use the dining room. Do you have a small room with intimate conversations of two to four people sitting at your table? Will you be hosting dinner parties, with laughter and visiting around the table for several hours? Do you serve family or cafeteria style? These are all helpful questions to think about before choosing a table and chairs.

If you love to host, you may want to consider a rectangular dining room table. Rectangular tables often have expandable leaves, allowing you to seat more people. A rectangular table and dining room chairs combine into a perfect dining room set for all those who love to host large families and large dinner parties. Upholstered dining room chairs will make it difficult to leave. Some dining room sets, like the 1869 Dining Collection, include benches, allowing for a variety of seating. Rectangular tables fit best into large rooms.

For smaller dining spaces…

If your dining room space is limited, but you still hope to maximize the space for guests or family members, consider an oval table. Oval tables often seat just as many as a comparable rectangular table, but they fit into smaller spaces with more ease. Their curved nature also turns guests’ faces to each other, creating a naturally, cozy setting for connection. The Baytown Dining Collection provides an elegant context for meals.

For many customers, however, a small, simple table fits their needs. The most popular table comes from the Oneida Room Setting, a dining room set with a circular table, a single pedestal, and an upholstered dining room chair. A small dining room table fits with ease into almost any space. It can create an inviting space for a small group of people to visit in a larger room. It can become the daily eating spot of a smaller dining room space.

Be sure to browse through the hundreds of dining room sets to see which one would be best for your home. Although the chairs are often chosen secondarily, it may be helpful to consider if you want easy-to-clean chairs, swivel stools, or even bar stools.

Storage

Omaha hutch

Serving people and preparing food can easily make the dining room and kitchen a place of disorganized chaos. While not every kitchen or dining room will need storage furniture, it may be helpful to consider all the unique dining room furniture that Mountain View Furniture has to offer.

Many homes today have built-in cupboards or pantries, but in their stead hutches, pantries, and islands provide excellent secondary storage. Pantries do well in storing dry food like baking items or snacks. Hutches provide quite a bit of space, stretching from floor to ceiling at times for out-of-sight storage of dishes and bowls. Islands can bring in much-needed counter space along with storage of all types of kitchen items, from appliances to dry goods. For pantries, islands, and hutches, Mountain View’s customizable options come in handy for those who wish to maximize small corners.

You can also explore a multitude of storage cabinets, ranging from buffets to jelly cupboards. Traditionally, many of these had specific uses, but today, you can use them for the purpose that best suits your needs. Homeowners with larger dining rooms and extensive dish collections may want to consider the buffet, made to store lots of dishware sets within easy access for hosting. But for those who wish to display special dishes, curio cabinets provide a safe, but accessible place to show off their heirlooms.

Consider a coffee bar or wine server

Of course, hosting people isn’t just about food and dishes. Beverages play an important role in hosting as well. Mountain View Furniture carries the more traditional wine servers in every size and shape but has also expanded to coffee bars. These coffee bars bring the perfect space to place an espresso machine with all the syrups and mugs to go with it. Beverage centers are perfect for secondary or basement dining areas. The Rowville Beverage Center features a small sink, space for a mini fridge and microwave, as well as perfect storage for mugs and wine bottles.

Specialty Dining Furniture

Just as many food traditions require specialized groceries, they also require specialized furniture. Here at Mountain View Furniture, the options offered are all heirloom pieces customizable to your family’s specific needs and wishes. They carry hard-to-find pieces, like the pie safe and bread box or jelly cupboard.

Pie safes come with a host of Pennsylvania Dutch traditions. They reflect a history of weekly-baked pies stored in a dry, ventilated cupboard, with legs to keep the bugs and other pests away. You may choose to put pies or other pantry items into your pie safe, but whatever you put into it, you’ll be bringing family traditions and history into your dining room.

Other storage cabinets display different ways of bringing beauty to the home. The quilt cabinet provides a place to display heirloom quilts. While the noble families of Europe displayed portraits of ancestors in their dining halls, a quilt might be a better symbol for your family’s ability to turn a simple household item into a work of art. The pottery cabinet provides a place for special hand-crafted urns. With its curved tops, the Bentley storage cabinet brings elegance to any display.

Swing Into Summer with a Rope Swing

For many of us across the US, this Summer has been anything but mild. The heat and sunshine have led many of us to be zapped of energy by the end of the day. So, what’s a good way to relax on these hot summer days? How about chilling out on a rope swing under a porch while sipping on an iced beverage?

Find a Swing that Fits Your Style

Not only should a swing fit your visual style, but it should fit your comfort style, too. There are many styles to choose from, and one of the most common is the rollback swing.

Adirondack swings have also come into high popularity. The resemblance to an Adirondack chair and durable poly frame has made this swing option a comfortable place to sit.

Wooden swings may not have all the same weather-proof features as a poly option, but there is a natural charm that comes with them. In fact, maybe your grandparents had a wood swing at one point, and what better way to stir up old memories than by getting one similar to theirs?

What Accessories Can Be Added?

Many swings have the potential to offer even more comfort than just the basic frame. One option you can look for while shopping swings is for a cup holder. Many two-seater swings can be built with a fold-down cup holder.

Another comfort feature you should explore is cushions. Not every rope swing has fitted cushions, but there are many options that do provide that feature. The best cushion companies that work with swing builders, like Sunbrella, offer many color options and are easy to clean and withstand the elements.

Best Places to Set Up a Rope Swing

Rope swings are great for A-frames (which might be available to purchase with your swing) or under your porch. Most double-seated swings are heavy enough that the average tree is not durable enough to hold them. However, a single-seat swing (especially if it isn’t made of poly) could be tied to a thick branch. It is best to know the weight of your swing and the average total weight that will be on the swing while in use. The last thing you want is to cause injury to someone, or damage to your property.

Safety is an important factor in order for you to have the most relaxation with your swing. That’s why we recommend you check out the selection of swings from our store, Mountain View Furniture. We work with trustworthy builders who take quality and safety seriously with each swing they make. Each swing you saw in this post is available to purchase from us and you can browse our swings online or you can visit our store in Greeneville, TN.

Eco-Friendly Outdoor Living: Poly Furniture’s Sustainability Story

The History

It is impossible to overstate the significance of long-term viability and environmentally responsible behavior in the modern world. It becomes crucial to look for products that support these ideals as we work to lessen our influence on the environment and save the earth for future generations. Amish Poly Furniture’s environmental history is a compelling study for outdoor furniture fans who want to choose products that are environmentally friendly.

The Art of Amish Craftsmanship

Amish poly furniture stands out not only for its timeless beauty and durability but also for the eco-friendly practices employed in its manufacturing process. The Amish community employs skilled workers who carefully manufacture outdoor poly furniture with an emphasis on sustainability and quality.

Recycled Materials: A Second Life for Plastics

Using recycled materials is one of the main tenets of sustainability in Amish poly furniture manufacturing. High-density polyethylene (HDPE), a kind of plastic made from recycled post-consumer waste like milk jugs and detergent bottles, is used to make the furniture. Amish poly furniture lessens the environmental impact of plastic waste by repurposing these plastics and keeping them out of the ocean or landfill.

Minimal Waste Production: A Commitment to Efficiency

In addition to utilizing recycled materials, the manufacturing process of Amish poly furniture is designed to minimize waste production. From the initial design phase to the final assembly, every effort is made to optimize material usage and reduce excess waste. Scraps and offcuts are recycled or repurposed whenever possible, showcasing a commitment to efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Longevity and Low Maintenance: A Sustainable Choice

Beyond using environmentally friendly production processes, Amish poly furniture has long-term benefits for sustainability. Poly furniture requires almost no maintenance, in contrast to typical hardwood outdoor furniture that can need to be refinished and maintained on a regular basis. Its ability to withstand the weather means that it won’t require chemical treatments or replacements year after year, thus lessening its impact on the environment.

Embracing Eco-Friendly Outdoor Living

By choosing Amish poly furniture for your outdoor living spaces, you are not only investing in quality craftsmanship and timeless design but also supporting sustainable practices that prioritize environmental stewardship. Each piece tells a story of resourcefulness, creativity, and a deep respect for the natural world.

In a world where conscious consumer choices can make a meaningful difference, Amish poly furniture stands as a shining example of how beauty, functionality, and sustainability can coexist harmoniously. Let your outdoor living spaces reflect your commitment to a greener future with Amish poly furniture – where eco-friendly practices meet unparalleled craftsmanship.

Dining Room Furniture Guide

Understanding your dining room and how to fill it.

If you’re new to homeownership or interior decorating, designing your space can feel overwhelming. Dining room furniture is one of the most important sets of furniture you’ll have in your home, but deciding what works best for your place can be a challenge. Rather than telling you how to create the “perfect dining room,” we’ll help you discover your options and style preferences with these 3 simple questions.

How do I plan to use my dining room?

While this may seem like a question with an obvious answer, there is more to the concept of “dining” beyond “eating.” Think about the kind of dining experience you’ll be hosting at your home:

  • Will you host formal/informal parties and guests?
  • Is your dining room strictly for yourself and your family?
  • Does my dining room also serve as a workspace?

As you ponder these possibilities, focus on the ones you’ll do most often. If you plan to have company over often, consider investing in a table large enough to accommodate your guest count. You may even want to invest in something of a particular style that will make your room feel put together and high-quality. If you will also be working in this room, look into dining room furniture that will keep your space organized and open.

When creating a layout for your dining room, make sure there is an easy path to access your chairs, table, shelves, other occasional pieces, cabinets, and hutches.

What size and shape of table do I need?

The size of your table is determined by two main points:

  • People seated
  • The size of your dining room

If you have larger numbers and plenty of space to fill, consider a rectangle or oval table. You can even get something with leaves to extend the table. Rectangular and oval tables are perfect for offering space in the middle for serving food. These tables also have the best comfortable seating ratio for a large guest count.

If you have fewer people dining with you on a regular basis and don’t have much space, consider a square table. Square tables easily fit into corners if needed, and it creates a personal dining area for smaller groups. If you have enough space to occasionally host more people, you add leaves onto the ends without losing too much space.

While a round table may also work for you, it begins to take up more space in a small dining room if it needs to seat more than 4 people. Round tables also tend to come in pedestal form more often than square tables, which can limit your leg space. Pedestal tables are lovely, but may not be ideal for those who need to support themselves when getting up. These tables can tip over if weight is unevenly distributed.

How to space chairs and extra furniture

Your dining room should feel comfortable and open. Even with a smaller dining space, you can still achieve that look.

For a small space: Something you may want to consider is a dining nook, like the South Haven Nook Set

Start by thinking about the space you need per person. You’ll want to make sure a minimum of 24 inches in table space is available per adult. Be sure enough space is between each chair and a wall for someone to pull their chair all the way out from beneath the table. Then, place your chairs accordingly around the table.

If you host both formal and informal dinners, create space by storing your special occasion dishes, table leaves, and extra chairs when they are not in use. You can add or purchase a set with under-table storage if you don’t have another place in your home for these items.

If you add special furniture to your room, such as a hutch, wine bar, or curio, leave enough space to comfortably open drawers and doors.
